Work
Tomorrow is my last day at New Relic! My role was Senior Developer Relations Program Manager, which meant building out developer-targeted programs and content with our Developer Relations team.I’ve learned and grown so much, but it’s time to move on to something new that better fits my long-term career goals. Namely, I want to grow my technical skills and move back into more DevRel community work versus project management.
I start my new role in June, so I have a little bit of time to rest and recharge before diving in. I’m too superstitious to say where I’ll be going until I start, so keep an eye out for an announcement sometime in June.
Hobbies
Games
It’s too hot in Texas already (apparently-historic heat and ERCOT is asking us to conserve power) so I’ve been inside more. Colby and I have slowly been playing through Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, which is delightful and super fun.
I’ve also been playing a lot of Idle Mafia and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, because silly mobile games are better than doomscrolling.
Gardening
I’m still working on my summer garden — I’m growing tomatoes, yellow squash, cucumber, garlic, and a bunch of herbs. I probably need to harvest the garlic but I’m not sure what I’m doing. My blueberry bush seems to be done for the season, but it was noteworthy enough I wanted to mention it.
I grew oyster mushrooms in my backyard after attending a mushroom cultivation workshop taught by a friend! It was so cool to grow normally-expensive, fancy mushrooms, and they tasted fantastic.
I also recently added a SubPod in the raised bed for worm composting, also called vermicomposting. Am I afraid of worms? Yes. Did I dig a hole and make a lovely home for them anyway? Also yes. Because of the planet. So far, it’s the easiest form of composting I’ve tried at home and I’m very impressed. Love my new wormy friends.
Feelings
Brain Stuff
I was diagnosed with ADHD recently and I am having a LOT of feelings about it! In women/AFAB people, ADHD can often be misdiagnosed as depression or anxiety, both of which I also have. I’m curious to see if treating the ADHD will reduce my depression and anxiety. Getting tested and treatment has been a painful process for an ADHD brain, and I haven’t started medication yet.
Politics
Politics in Texas and in the US in general have been rough lately. Between the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court leak, the attack on trans rights in Texas and other states, and the formula shortage, things have been pretty emotionally difficult for yours truly.
Parenting
My kiddo is 9 months old now (how?!) and I continue to feel honored to be his parent. I never thought I’d be that parent obsessed with their kid but truly, it is truly wonderful and he is such a light in my life. We don’t share him online, which is a shame because he’s incredibly cute.
Being a parent has made me re-evaluate how I spent my time and energy (mostly because I have less of it these days) in the best of ways.
Projects
Moving my old blog (RIP, xo Mia on WordPress) to this Squarespace site
My first quilt? I bought a rainbow quilt kit from Elise Joy a while back and haven’t started it!
Streaming is on pause currently, but I’m looking forward to seeing when I can pick it up again once my new job starts. In the meantime, I’ve been moderating chat in Colby’s stream every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
