This time, the questions was: “What does cosplay mean to you?” This is such a wide-open question and I was fascinated by the variety of answers given.
For me, cosplay represents so much. Cosplay has been a source of expression, fun, and even self-esteem for me. It started as a way to have fun with my friends at conventions and grew to so much more. Now, I see it as one of my creative outlets. I love the process of creating something new, expanding my skill set, and making something out of nothing. It’s a way to express my love for something — after all, what shows how much I care about a character or series than spending hours and hours on re-creating something fictional?
More than just fandom, though, cosplay has helped me become more comfortable with who I am as a person. It may seem counter-intuitive that dressing as someone else gives me confidence in myself, but it’s true! The transformative powers of cosplay have done a lot to improve my own perception of my self-worth. Being able to create something that I think is cool reminds me that I am so much more than my appearance or paycheck.
Now, for your answers!
It means having fun and getting to be a kid again. It’s playing dress up and becoming the heroes of your youth…or your adulthood.
Also, I LOVE it’s “Rip it up, and Start again,” & made from scratch/what’s in your closet/etc. ability. There’s so many ways to do it, and you can jump in at any level and still have fun! Everyone needs to try it at least once! Don’t wait *cough*a decade *cough* too long to do it! – Joie Fatale

My ~special hair~ makes it hard for me to play with my look. Some days I wanna be blond + who knew I could pull off black hair?? Cosplay allows you to be literally almost anyone you want to be and that’s super exciting. – Peony

Cosplay is a gateway drug into confidence. As a shy and nerdy girl, (which I am sure many geeks can relate too) I didn’t have the self-esteem or the social know-how to really understand how to be myself around others, or who I even was. I was awkward and confused. I was into video games, card games, anime, and a lot of things my classmates teased me for. But identifying in the characters portrayed in the shows, video games, and manga that I’d read gave me fictional role models who weren’t the bullies in my school, but the people who never betrayed my trust and who weren’t afraid to be themselves. Cosplaying gave me a model and a mold to try to fit into, which ultimately helped me to cast my own mold and realize my own identity by building my confidence. Yeah… cosplay is my gateway drug of choice. <3 – Darling Stewie
